Are You Making These Reed Diffuser Mistakes?

2 minute read

Diffusers are the heroes of home fragrance. They don't require a flame, they look effortlessly chic, and deliver a constant stream of your favourite scent. But have you ever bought a new diffuser, set it down, and wondered why your room doesn't smell beautiful?

Chances are, you might be making a few common mistakes. To help you get the most out of your fragrance, we've rounded up some of the most common reed diffuser mistakes, and how to fix them.

Placing Your Diffuser in the Wrong Spot

Diffusers rely on natural airflow to move the scent around the room, if it's trapped in a corner, the fragrance will just sit there.

  • Where they work best: High traffic areas, such as hallways, entryways, bathrooms, or near the door of a bedroom.
  • Why it works: The natural movement of air acts like a fan, circulating it beautifully throughout the space.

Forgetting to Flip the Reeds

If your diffuser seems to have lost it's punch after a few weeks, you might just need to flip the reeds.

  • When and why to flip: Over time, the top of the reeds can dry out while the bottom stays saturated. To give your home an instant burst of freshness, carefully flip the reeds upside down every 2 weeks.

Putting it Near Direct Heat or Sunlight

Whilst we love to decorate our windowsills, they're one of the worst places to put a reed diffuser.

  • The problem with heat: Direct sunlight and radiators cause the temperature of fragrance liquid to rise and causes the fragrance to evaporate extremely fast.
  • Where to avoid: Keep your diffusers away from sunny windowsills, and drafty air conditioning vents. Stick to cool, shaded spots where the oil can evaporate at a slow, steady pace.

Keeping Old Reeds for Too Long

When your diffuser fragrance runs out, you might think you can pour in the new fragrance and keep using the same old sticks, however this won't work.

  • Why you must replace them: Over months of use, reeds become clogged and can no longer draw new fragrance up. Always discard old reeds and start fresh whenever you open a new bottle of fragrance.

Now that you know the secrets to making your scent last, it's time to find your next signature fragrance.
